Reading in 2024

202020212022, 2023

Like last year, very heavily focused on Fantasy and SciFi (29 books)!

Not much Maths (2 books), 4 non-fiction books and no science or economics! This would make it a pretty bad year, were it not for the Fiction (17 books) — I read Ring Shout early on, but ended the year with Calvino (brilliant!) and Stoner, which are on a different plane than anything I’ve read. Any year with these three books is a quality year.

Fiction

The delightful adventures of Prof. Jason Fitger!

The Best Books I read this year, in increasing order of best-ness:

Slow horses to the rescue!

I’m conflicted about Yellowface: what an absolutely self-involved, oblivious character… but I guess that’s the point!

Maths

Non-Fiction

I’m not sure what the author intended, but I came away with a distinct feeling that I would not want to be working at this company. And in the last few months, there have been multiple ‘incidents’ with IndiGo, which did not surprise me at all!

Science Fiction and Fantasy

The Wheel of Time, Robert Jordan & Brandon Sanderson

The Machineries of Empire Series, Yoon Ha Lee

The Gentleman Bastards! Brilliant storytelling

The Murderbot Diaries. This reminds me of ‘Klara and the Sun’, by Kazuo Ishiguro. Is the best way of understanding human nature is through the eyes of a non-human?
